Woody Miller on Bode

Our news writer, Marla, has mailed Bode Miller's dad, Woody Miller, and he was so nice and gave her answers to her questions about Bode. So here it is, only at bodelicious.net, an interview with Woody Miller, Bode's father.

Marla: Over the past two or three years Bode´s had incredible success on the World Cup, in the 2002 Olympics and in the 2003 World Championships. Did you always expect that kind of success Bode´s been having recently?
Woody: Not at all! His career has been a series of quantum surprises.

Marla: Did Bode always want to become a skier? And what did you want him to become or wish for him to become?
Woody: Ever since the age of three Bode has been interested in sliding on skis, snurfborads, sleds, snowboards and anything else that slides. I wished for him to stay happy and healthy and become all that he wanted to be.

Marla: How would you describe Bode in three words?
Woody: Bodacious,(two words in one), Generous, and ……. Some word that means wise and playful!

Marla: Many people describe Bode´s upbringing as unique and say it has effected his personality a lot. Do you think that ´s true? How has it effected him? What were your thought s in choosing that kind of lifestyle you shared in Bode´s early years?
Woody: There is a theory that individual sanity and societal sanity depends upon an critical prolonged exposure to the natural world during childhood. I think this concept as well as a personal longing to be close to nature and simple harmony were my thoughts behind the lifestyle we pursued during Bode’s childhood. Bode’s mother and I tried to do what we could to avoid the need to earn money- see “Living the Good Life” by Scott and Helen Nearing whom we had met and admired. Although our income was small we felt rich in our ability to spend the bulk of our time with our growing family. I think Bode got a very pragmatic understanding of the world around him and what was going on. We were not particularly protective even from an early age but we were alert and ready to come to their rescue as they explored the world around them that included a constantly changing mountain brook. Living in a house that was often not much above freezing helped develop a stoic element as well as an understanding of the need to develop and maintain a supply of firewood. In other word a work ethic. It was a very interesting, peaceful and demanding place to grow up I think.

Marla: It´s rather special for a WC and World champion skier to serve as a tennis-coach in summer. Do you think it helps him not lose the ground under his feet, like many other successful athletes have?
Woody: I hope so. I don’t have expectations each year that he will find time to devote to the camp with so many other options and commitments. He definitely enjoys the break from skiing and always has as long as he’s been racing. We are very grateful for his participation at the camp. He has an infectious enthusiasm for all aspects of camp life and more so than anyone, including his grandfather and founder of the camp, he participates because he is a natural teacher who get real satisfaction in helping campers learn about themselves and tennis.

Marla: What do you think are Bode´s future goals in skiing?
Woody: I believe Bode when he says he wants to be a threat to be on the podium in every event. He has said in the past that when he starts to do well in one event he starts training harder in other events. Success is a convergence of health, experience, equipment, dedication and luck. Some of that is not under his control but I see him moving toward his goals and enjoying the journey!

Marla: What are your biggest wishes for him in the future?
Woody: My biggest wishes for Bode are that he stays healthy and happy.
